And he’s right! Sir Paul, who is 68 today, chose the lesser-known tracks over more commercially successful songs such as Yesterday, which has been covered 3,500 times.

As you know recording star M.I.A. was yesterday lambasted in the NY Times for the contradictions in her lavish LA lifestyle and her polictical views regrading her homeland of Sri Lanka. In retaliation, MIA tweeted the phone number of the author of the NY Times piece. Then everyone flipped the hell out.

Paul Gray, the bassist from the Grammy award-winning band Slipknot, was found dead at a hotel in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday. Police are investigating the cause of death, though there’s been no evidence of foul play. The 38-year-old was a founding member of the platinum-selling band, which most recently released the album All Hope Is Gone in 2008. “It’s just a devastating loss for the Des Moines music scene and the world’s music scene,” said Matt Nyberg, a close friend and colleague. “He was always one of the nicest guys. You never heard anything negative from him.” An autopsy is set for Tuesday, during which toxicology tests will be conducted.

Guru, the monotone-voiced MC in the classic hip hop group Gang Starr, died yesterday after an extended battle with cancer. He was 43. One of Musictoob’s favourite rappers, he and DJ Premier were also one of East Coast hip hop’s most consistently respected duos. If you would like to recall when hip hop was synonomous with deathless cool, watch the clip above.

Blur’s first single since 2003 is literally about Blur recording their first single since 2003. To a melody that kinda recalls “(I Just) Died in Your Arms,” Damon Albarn sings about waking up, eating some porridge, and riding his bike to the studio where he and his bandmates laid down this very track. Since “Fool’s Day” was seemingly written in a rush (it has no chorus) on the day it was recorded, we can probably infer that Blur have not been secretly working on a new album with plans to surprise us all soon. Listen below. (New York)

Not everyone’s lining up for Lady Gaga: When the pop star asked Grace Jones to collaborate with her, Jones said no. “I’d just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually,” Jones explains. “I’ve seen some things she’s worn that I’ve worn, and that does kind of piss me off.” Jones was a Studio 54 star and a muse of Andy Warhol.

“For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you.”

In 1992, Irish catholic pop singer outraged America when she ripped up a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live as a protest against child abuse. You can see the video here. But, given the latest round of child molestation charges against the Catholic church, and the Pope’s dismissal of those same charges as “petty gossip”, could it be that she was right all along? Maybe we all owe her an apology?

Beloved singer-songwriter and Big Star frontman Alex Chilton died today at the age of 59. Chilton was 16 when he joined the Box Tops, who had a No. 1 hit with “The Letter” in 1967. He went on to team up with three other Nashville musicians to form Big Star in 1972. Indicative of the impact he had on swarms of musicians, Chilton was honored by the Replacements in their 1987 song “Alex Chilton.” The cause of the death is believed to have been a heart attack.
