David Maher-Roberts: Five Current Faves

May 7th, 2008 by ttucker23 · No Comments · Interviews

David Maher-Roberts is Chief Executive Officer of The Filter, an entertainment recommendation engine backed by Peter Gabriel. The Filter website is currently in private beta, and is creating a big buzz around the blogosphere. It’s also a neat, free piece of software that helps you build fantastic playlists from the music stored on your PC, Mac, iPod or Nokia mobile phone. Here, the 38 year old Bath resident picks his favourite songs of the moment.

1. Living Darfur (Mattafix)

I was on holiday in Nice, and got the chance to see Mattafix perform this song. I was just transfixed by his voice, the African harmonies and the raw emotion. The proceeds of the song go to help the Darfur crisis.

2. In The Sun (Michael Stipe)

Another crisis relief song - this time to help the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina - brings together Chris Martin and Michael Stipe, and is haunting. Listen to this loud early in the morning just as the sun rises. You’ll understand why.

3. Don’t Dream It’s Over (Crowded House)

Love Crowded House generally, but this song is always a favourite as it was played at my wedding and was the one Ingrid and I danced to first. The band who played it was made up of my mates. It was a special moment that I will never forget.

4. Like a Hobo (Charlie Winston)

I was in Cannes for a music show in January this year, and heard Charlie perform this on stage at a Peter Gabriel’s “Personality of the Year” award dinner. Charlie’s energy and on stage presence is infectious. You can’t stop yourself from clapping along to this one.

5. Solsbury Hill (Peter Gabriel)

This is my favourite PG song. Partly because of the song, partly because it is about a hill just outside Bath (where I have lived for 15 years). It never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck prickle. I love the way the momentum picks up throughout the song - and it feels like it should never end. You have to see it live.
