"Musictoob serves up juicy tidbits from the music scene" - The Wall Street Journal
Frances Bean Cobain is to launch a singing career – and God knows she will have no shortage of material for her lyrics. But will she be successful? Perhaps by looking at nine other rock star kids’ careers we will get an idea of how the 17 year old will fare in the rough and tumble of the music business. After the jump!
Cobain junior is to appear as a back up singer on an album by Amanda Plamer out March 30th. Ok it’s hardly Elvis’s comeback special but we at Musictoob guarantee this will only be the start. What can Cobain expect of a future singer?
Julian Lennon
Who’s your daddy? John Lennon, from that band, oh you know.
Successful? For a while yes. Lennon junior’s singing voice was unnervingly similar to his famous dad’s and enjoyed two top ten hits with Too Late for Goodbye’s and Valotte. But it didn’t last.
Happy? Lennon had very little contact with his father after John left when he was five. He was starting to rebuild a relationship with his dad when in 1980, John Lennon was assassinated. Julian was left little in his father’s will and was obliged to buy some of his dad’s possession at auction. Julian has struggled with drug and alcohol problems in the past.
Quote: “He [John Lennon] said I’d come out of a whiskey bottle on a Saturday night. You think, where’s the love in that?”
Majesty or tragedy? Tragedy
Miley Cyrus
Who’s your daddy? Achy breaky Billy Ray Cyrus
Successful? Her TV show Hannah Montana is insanely successful, she has enjoyed two Billboard number one albums and been listed in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People In the World list in 2008.
Happy? The stress of having to perpetually be a preteen is starting to show: despite being a commited Christian, Cyrus is famous for provocatively posing for pictures on her Twitter feed (which she subsequently shut down) as well as for Vanity Fair. Her sexy dance at the Teen Choice Awards also drew criticism. The seventeen year old seems hellbent on upending her wholesome image.
Quote: “People would say, ‘You’re only 14, you’re getting the same pressure [Britney, Lindsay] are.’ And it’s like… yes I am. It’s beacause this life I lead is pretty crazy. It’s just about having values, and having pride on yourself.”
Majesty or tragedy? Tragedy
Rufus Wainwright
Who’s your daddy? Loudon Wainwright III
Successful? Rufus has built a respectable career as a singer songwriter.
Happy? In his song Dinner at 8, openly gay Rufus descibed an argument with his father about who was more famous. Rufus struggled with crack addiction, eventually reaching out to Elton John for help. Rufus recently sang at the funeral of his mkother, the folk singer Kate McGarrigle.
Quote: “I may not lead the most dramatic life, but in my brain it’s War and Peace everyday.”
Majesty or tragedy? Majesty!
Jeff Buckley
Who’s your daddy? Tim Buckley
Successful? Most famous for his version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, he will also be rembered for drunkenly drowning in the Wolf River in Memphis. His only album, Grace, had a big impact on Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.
Happy? Buckley only met his famous dad, Tim, once when he was eight years old. (Buckley snr died of a heroin overdose). At a tribute concert to his dead father, Jeff performed I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain, a song his dad wrote about him and his mother. Sad!
Quote: ““Lots of time I feel like I don’t belong to this place.”
Majesty or tragedy? Tragedy
Coco Sumner
Who’s your daddy? Sting
Successful? Eliot Pauline Sumner – who operates under the name I Blame Coco -releases first single Caesar this month. She is a model and has performed with one man tsunami Pete Doherty.
Happy? A life of undiluted privilege does not appear to have marked her unduly. The 19 year old, who grew up in a small village in Wiltshire, claims she painfully shy and has produced music that does not scream famous kid vanity project.
Quote: “I’m bad in social situations. I find it hard meeting people. I get nervous quite a lot.”
Majesty or tragedy? Too soon to tell.
Kelly Osbourne
Who’s Your Daddy? Ozzy rools!
Successful? Her debut album Shut Up was a middle sized hit, but Epic dropped her after it got bad reviews. However this “potty mouthed spitfire” went on to carve herself a niche as a TV personality and radio presenter. She is expcially successful in the UK and last year published her autobiography Fierce.
Happy? She has admitted to problems with drugs and bulimia.
Quote: “I guess I have friends around me but when you’re paying them can they ever really be true friends?”
Majesty or tragedy? Tragedy waiting to happen
Ziggy Marley
Who’s your daddy? Bob, the reggae legend
Successful? Ziggy has won five Grammys. His wife is a former vice president at the William Morris Talent Agency and the Marleys divide their time between their three homes. He is Hollywood’s favourite reggae singer and has appeared, alongside his music, in countless TV shows and movies including Shark’s Tale.
Happy: Why not?
Quote: “Americans should have a policy of love. That should be the foreign policy, love. Export Love.”
Majesty or tragedy? Does anyone you know actually listen to Ziggy Marley’s music? Tragedy!
