John Mayer’s latest album, “Battle Studies” (Columbia), easily topped the Billboard chart this week with 286,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
In a week heavy with prominent new releases as the music industry gears up the for the holiday-shopping period, Andrea Bocelli’s “My Christmas” (Sugar/Decca) held at No. 2 with 185,000 sales, beating out Norah Jones (No. 3 with 180,000 sales), the Christian rock band Casting Crowns (No. 4, 167,000), 50 Cent (No. 5, 160,000) and the 15-year-old pop heartthrob Justin Bieber (No. 6, 137,000).
The next two spots on Billboard’s chart were held by soundtracks. “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” (Epic) fell three spots to No. 7 with 96,000, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” (Chop Shop/Atlantic) jumped two to No. 8, with 93,000 sales.
Next week will bring another wave of high-charting new albums, by Adam Lambert, Shakira and Rihanna. But the biggest hit is expected to be Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” (Syco Music/Columbia). Billboard, citing preliminary numbers from SoundScan, predicted that “I Dreamed a Dream” would open with as many as 600,000 sales, and if it exceeds 608,000, it would have the biggest opening of any album this year, beating Eminem’s “Relapse.”
