In death as in life, Michael Jackson every move was enshrined in publicity. His memorial then was fitting, as it was a freak show that could be entitled Death As Entertainment Opportunity. Even Jackson’s kids played their part.
Michael Jackson’s heartbroken children said farewell to their dad last night after taking to the stage at his extraordinary memorial.
Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11, and seven-year-old Prince Michael II, who was clutching a Jacko doll, joined showbiz stars to sing their father’s hit We Are The World.
But it was tearful Paris who captured the hearts of millions watching worldwide with a moving personal tribute.
She said: “I just want to say, ever since I was born daddy has been best father you could ever imagine. I just want to say I love him so much.”
Earlier Jacko’s golden coffin had been transported to the LA memorial in an 18-car motorcade.
For two hours it had been a memorial like no other. Slightly chaotic, occasionally cringeworthy and very Hollywood.
Then, a tear-soaked tribute from one little girl revealed the true meaning of the event and stripped away 50 years of mystique that had surrounded Michael Joseph Jackson.
He was, at the end, just a dad who’d loved his kids. And whose kids adored him.
A sobbing Paris Jackson, 11, said: “I just wanted to say, ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. I just wanted to say I love him so much.” In two sentences Paris encapsulated a family tragedy.
Watched by her tearful little brother Prince Michael II, known as Blanket, and elder brother Prince Michael, 12, Paris’s tribute was raw and racked with pain. Unlike the adults around her she was unable to hide her sadness. She just wanted her daddy back.
As she paid her poignant tribute, Paris was surrounded by her aunts and uncles.
When she momentarily faltered, Janet Jackson swiftly came to her aid. Adjusting the microphone so it was closer to Paris’s mouth, Janet whispered: “Speak up sweetheart, speak up.”
Janet rubbed Paris’s arm, encouraging her niece and then embraced her as she finished speaking.
