Musictoob Exclusive Interview: Mandy Moore on her secret wedding to Ryan Adams

mm02Mandy Moore’s made waves recently for everything from self-parody on HBO’s Entourage to a highly buzzed-about “secret” wedding to rocker Ryan Adams. As her video for “I Could Break Your Heart Any Day Of The Week,” from upcoming release Amanda Leigh, premieres today on Yahoo! Music; she dishes on Twitter, learning the bass and that wedding.

We noticed you’re on Twitter now! Last time we spoke you weren’t.

“Oh yeah! I didn’t know what Twitter was. I had a tiny introduction and education … it’s so much easier than blogging and all that other stuff, which I don’t really do.”

On Twitter, it says you had a bass lesson. Why the bass?

“Ha! I’ve just been curious. I have a tiny bit of piano and guitar under my belt, but – I think that the bass is pretty badass. I love seeing female bass players.”

I Could Break …” is the first single. Congratulations!

“Thanks! Yeah, it’s definitely the poppiest one. For this record, in general…I’ve been someone who’s sort of hated what I’ve been my entire career, and this is the first opportunity I’ve had to really make music that’s reflective of myself. You know, I look back and cringe, but in the moment, I was like ‘Cool, someone came to me with songs they had written for me!’ At 14 or 15, I was like ‘this is the coolest thing ever!’

The single’s lyrics are empowering. Considering your story, do you see yourself as a role model?

“[laughs] No, I wouldn’t necessarily go that far…It’s always a bit of a bummer feeling like I always have to be on the defense, to defend where I am now – as if it’s so impossible that I would have grown up. That’s simply what it is; people don’t stick to what they were doing when they were 14 or 15. This is the record I want to make when I’m 24 and 25.”

Speaking of defense, we cringe to think what Miley Cyrus will be doing 10 years from now.

“Yeah, it’s like wow, let’s just be in the now. And give people credit for being able to change and grow up, and not judge it.”

Now everybody’s a judge. We live in the age of the “reality show,” and people thrive on gummy personal gossip. You went with a “secret” wedding.

“Certainly that wasn’t something you necessarily want coming out. It was something that was kept private for a reason. [laughs] That was a bit unfortunate, because I hadn’t even had the opportunity to tell people myself, really. At the end of the day, we were allowed to have our little moment for ourselves, so that’s all that really matters.”

Even though you don’t see it yourself, there are definitely people that would look at you and your new look and attitude and see a role model.

“Thanks! I really appreciate that.”

Did you see our last interview?

“I like the internet, but I think I’ve learned my lesson to kinda stay away. Stay away!”

Phew! That means she didn’t see what we wrote about Kelly Clarkson.

The album, Amanda Leigh, hits stores May 26th – and the video premieres today! Go watch it on Yahoo! Music — and do like Mandy; take a bass lesson or two!
