"Musictoob serves up juicy tidbits from the music scene" - The Wall Street Journal
Art: A German artist, Natascha Stellmach, has stolen the ashes of Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, and will be turning what’s left of the unfortunate grunger into a big spliff. The hash/Cobain combination is going to be smoked by Stellmach at a secret Berlin location as the final component in her installation piece for the group exhibition at Berlin’s Galerie Wagner + Partner. I’m not sure if that ranks alongside digging up dead people to make lampshades out of them, like the charming Ed Gein did, but I reckon it’s pretty close. What kind of nut nut drug dealer does she have, anyway?
Politics: The Guardian music blog wants to tell us ‘Why Sarah Palin is totally rock’n'roll.’ An excerpt here: “Palin combines the DIY ethic of punk with the hamfisted amateurism of a Balkan Eurovision entry. But more than that, faced with a reasonably competent interviewer on live TV she resembles us all in that dream we share about playing guitar live onstage with U2. The one where Bono beckons you into the limelight. You throw an incredibly sexy shape that has millions of U2 fans screaming in appreciation. And then you crap yourself as you remember that you can’t actually play a single note.”
Film: A film about the punk band Heavy Load, made up of musicians with and without learning disabilities has been premiered in London, reports BBC news. The self-titled documentary has been co-directed by award-winners Jerry Rothwell and Louise Osmond and follows the band over two years as they record their first album. It also charts the band’s efforts to break into the mainstream, from fundraising gigs to playing tough pubs. Collectively the band members’ influences range from Iron Maiden and Kiss to George Michael and Rick Astley.
Obituary: Kingston Trio member, Nick Reynolds, has died at the age of 75 after suffering acute respiratory disease and other illnesses in San Diego. The Trio inspired a folk music revival and paved the way for artists such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary. “We got America up and singing,” Reynolds said.
