Morrissey is recovering after being rushed to hospital after he collapsed onstage at the weekend with breathing difficulties. See the pictures after the jump.
The 50-year-old was seen slumping to the floor with chest pains and struggling to breathe, raising fears that he may have been having a heart attack.
He then lost consciousness briefly and was carried off stage.
Paramedics checked him over and he was taken to hospital.
Tearful fans feared the worst for the former Smiths frontman. But he recovered in hospital and was released yesterday afternoon.
Doctors and his publicists would not reveal details of his condition.
Morrissey was singing the opening number of his concert at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon when he collapsed around 9pm on Saturday.
Fans said afterwards that he appeared to be straining and ‘wincing’ in pain as he sang.
Audience members said that he came on stage looking drawn and told the audience: ‘Good evening… probably.’
Just as he hit the final notes of The Smiths’ song This Charming Man, his knees buckled and he slumped to the ground.
Assistant tour manager Charlie Browne and a member of the technical crew carried him off stage.
Initially, there were boos from the 1,000-strong crowd when it was announced that the concert had been cancelled. Morrissey has called off other concerts.
But the jeers were drowned out by cries of concern after a stagehand came to the microphone and said the singer was ’seriously ill’. Some fans burst into tears.
Yesterday, a spokesman for Great Western Hospital in Swindon said: ‘Morrissey was admitted overnight as a precautionary measure. He is much improved and has now been discharged home.’
A Great Western Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: ‘Just after 9pm we got a call to a 50-year-old man who was reported to be reported to be suffering from respiratory problems and was unconscious.
‘We sent a paramedic in a doubled-crewed ambulance.
‘When they arrived they found a conscious patient who was not feeling well at all. They made an initial assessment and took him to the Great Western Hospital for further assessment.’
In a Twitter message, TV presenter Jonathan Ross said he had contacted Morrissey’s personal assistant and that the singer hoped to continue with his tour.
Morrissey has already cancelled a number of dates this year citing an ‘unspecified illness’.
