"Musictoob serves up juicy tidbits from the music scene and beyond" - The Wall Street Journal
Since boomtown brat and tabloid princess, Peaches Geldof, 19, turned teen wife last week, the press have been going nuts trying to find out about her new husband, Max Drummey, 23. This interest is, in part, due to speculation about their marriage being a press stunt to promote his “gentlemen rock” band (their words, not mine), Chester French ( a name that nods to American sculptor, Daniel Chester French). Geldof met Drummey when his band played July’s iTunes Festival in London, a music event that she co-hosted. Geldof reportedly offered Max a place to stay while he was in town. Max and his bandmate, D.A Wallach, have already knocked back a recording deal with Kanye West. Instead, Chester French signed with Pharrell Williams, the N*E*R*D / Neptunes main man on his Star Trek label. “When I first heard Chester French, I felt like I had stumbled upon two geniuses,” he said. “You’re going to watch history unfold with these guys. I feel it in my gut.” Williams describes their sound as “cool…kids who sound Beatle-esque with hints of Motown”. Chetser French may be part of resurgence of cool US bands filling a void created by the glut of rubbish UK ones. (Consult the NME’s “Top 25 Bands Making America Cool Again” list, which Chester French featured in at the start of August.) According to their facebook page: “Max is the product of Boston, Massachusetts
and a strong musical upbringing, beginning classical piano lessons at three, studying jazz guitar, jazz and classical composition through high school, picking up further instrumental skills, and finally settling on pop music in college. While D.A. sings lead vocals and Max scores and plays the majority of instruments for Chester French, they work collaboratively on every detail from the first note to the final mix. The two first met in their freshman year dining hall at Harvard. Along with three friends they formed the first incarnation of Chester French and the quintet quickly cut its teeth playing shows around campus and at Boston bars. At the end of the year, they won a local battle of the bands and, with only two days and $300 to spend, cut a five song EP aptly titled Chester French’s First Love.” The Chester French debut album, ‘Love the Future’, is due out later this year, featuring tracks titled ‘The Jimmy Choos’, ‘Beneath The Veil’ and ‘She Loves Everybody’. Let’s hope he’s prepared for the tabloid feeding frenzy that he has married into.
